3 Most Loathsome Fantasy Villains

Lets look at the most detestable fantasy villains.  Not the best, not the most nuanced, but the most reviled.

#3 The Dagda Mor - Elfstones of Shanara

The Reaper was probably scarier. Scratch that, the Reaper was definitely the scariest thing in the Shannara world.  But The Dagda Mor was the mastermind, a completely malevolent entity hell bent on destruction, with no redeeming qualities. Lucky for us, Allanon and friends came out on top.

#2 Joffrey Baratheon - Song of Ice and Fire

In a series known for showing multiple points of view and having "evil" characters who's actions are later justified by their perspective, there is almost universal agreement that Joffrey is just an insufferable, malicious, and sadistic little shit. There were few people who did not rejoice when the Purple Wedding came.

#1 Voldemort - Harry Potter

He starts off the series as a mysterious bogeyman, and with each successive book we are given more and more reasons to detest him. Even when we hear about his origin story, which should humanize him, it only serves to make him appear more of a detestable bigot.

Who's on your list?

Bonus points to anyone who can explain the origin of the term "Death Eaters" to me.  It seems like something that JK Rowling used because it sounds scary, but doesn't actually make any sense. I don't remember the origin being explained in the books.
