An interesting story, I've seen it classified mostly as a
fantasy, but it doesn't have a very fantasy feel to it. More like science
fiction, but with miracles instead of science. Oh yeah, and murder mystery
elements.
The setting is imaginative and one of the strengths of the
novel. The feel is - I'm not sure, central Asian? Indian subcontinent? Eastern Europe?
Either way it subverts your fantasy expectations.
Shara is an unconventional but likable main character. Her
Chewbacca figure, Sigrud, is the crowd-pleaser strong/silent unstoppable
killing machine. My favorite character, the military governor of Bulikov, has a
strong personality and wry sense of humor.
This is book is written in present tense, which might turn off
some readers.
This will appeal to readers who like:
Imaginative settings
Atypical characters/subversion of fantasy tropes
Philosophical undertones
Female POC protagonist
You will hate if you:
Hate use of present tense
