Chapter 13
Kote becomes aware that
Bast has been eavesdropping on them and asks him to come out. Chronicler
notices something odd about him. Finally he realizes Bast is not what he seems,
he is apparently some sort of demon. Chronicler turns out to be a bit of an
arcanist too and puts up some sort of protective barrier, and things get tense.
Kote takes charge and forces them to call a truce via beer summit. He fetches
some food and when he comes back he is ready to dive into his tale again.
Bast continues to be the
most intriguing character introduced so far. What is he, what does he
want, how did he come to serve Kote? All this is yet to be revealed. Also, more
than meets the eye to Chronicler, I guess we should have expected that.
Chapter 14
During a lesson with Abenthy, Kote tries to call the wind. He succeeds in
linking the air in his lungs to the air outside, and nearly dies. Abenthy is
able to save him. The troupe passes a greystone, and , per custom, stops for
the night. That night, Kote talks to Ben, who tells him that he can be thoughtless
and he must reconsider how much he is teaching him. After that, he slows the
pace of his teaching considerably. We learn Kote is 12 years old.
Little action has
happened in the first 100 pages but several crumbs of interesting people,
places, and events keep getting dropped without context to pique your
curiosity. Kote is rash in his enthusiasm to learn naming, and nearly gets himself killed -- but yeesh, what would you expect from a 12 year old? Ben is maybe realizing that just because Kote is able to learn the arcane arts doesn't mean he has the maturity to use them appropriately.
Chapter 15
Abenthy meets a widow and
decides to part ways with the company. A farewell party combined with Kote's
12th birthday party is arranged. During the party, Kote's father sings the
opening of the song he's been working on about Lanre. The next day, Kote finds
a book of logic that Ben left for him as a present. A note in it is wishes him
good luck a the university.
Sad to say goodbye to Ben
who was a great character! At least he got a great farewell party! Hopefully he will cross our path again. The book, will, I'm sure, have significance later.
