Chapter 22
We learn the traditions
of High Mourning during midwinter. Kote tries begging in the rich part of town
and is beaten by a guard. He stumbles back to his part of town, falls in a
snowdrift and is about to die. He is helped by a masked couple, one of whom is
named Gerrek. He manages to get back to his hiding place with some food and
drink.
Wondering if we will see
the masked couple again and what role they will play? Probably they are rich
since Gerrek is generous with his coin.
Chapter 23
Kote drags himself to
Trapis' basement. Trapis tells the story of the demon Encanis and the god
Tehlu. Kote suspects that Trapis may have once been a priest.
We get some background
mythology for the religion of this world. There are some clear parallels to
Christianity, it the particulars are quite different. It's not clear to
me what the comment on religion, if any, is meant to be.
Chapter 24
Kote is hiding in his
spot on the roof when he spots a gang beating up a young kid, he is about to
intervene but then thinks about the consequences of the gang finding his safe
spot and decides not to.
A little surprising that
Kote became so hardened by life on the streets to not do the heroic thing and
intervene. Not exactly a heroic course, but Kote is young here and in a vulnerable position -- I imagine his character arc will take him to a more heroic place.
