Chapter 25
Kote gives Chronicler a break. Bast asks why he stayed in
Tarbean, to which Kote replies he had nowhere to go. When Bast mentions
Abenthy, Kote replies that it would have been a long journey for a penniless
boy. He says that someone named Skarpi finally gave the impetus for him to
leave Tarbean.
Kote express his regret that he did not intervene on behalf of
the boy and gives the books best line so far: Bones mend. Regret stays
with you forever. Interested to learn who Skarpi is.
Chapter 26
Kote hears about a bard performing in Dockside but he can't go.
He gives the backstory of how he ran into Pike again, followed him to his
hide-hole and destroyed it. Later he sets Pike on fire.
He goes to see the performer despite his fear of being
recognized by Pike or his crew. The performer is named Skarpi. Kote requests
the story of Lanre, an ancient hero who is brought back from the dead by
his lover Lydia, and later goes crazy (although they specify not REALLY crazy)
when she dies and he can't bring her back. He betrays his friend Selitos and
destroys all but one of the Empire's cities. Selitos realizes the betrayal but
is incapacitated by Lanre, who can has renamed himself Haliax. Selitos then
gouges out his own eye and casts a curse on Haliax. Later, Kote and Skarpi have
a philosophical talk about the nature of storytelling.
Bombshell chapter with Haliax origin story! Was Cinder one of
his original followers? Haliax keeps protesting he's not crazy but I think,
based on his logic, he's close enough as makes no difference.
Looks like Kote has a new mentor?
Chapter 27
Kote is on a high after hearing a good tale, but something nags
at him. Finally he piece together that Haliax was the name of one of the
Chandrian who killed his family, and that the reason they came was because of
the song his father was making about Lanre.
So, why haven't the Chandrian come for Skarpi?
